Directions: How to make a skirt out of jeans
How to turn jeans into a skirt step 1:
The first thing you need to do is remove the inside seam of the jeans, from both pant legs.Use a seam ripper for this step. (This is the step that takes the longest...promise!)
Your jeans should look similar to this when finished ripping out the inside seam.
How to turn jeans into a skirt step 2:
Next, fold the pant legs up to about an inch or so above the crotch area. How to turn jeans into a skirt step 3:
Next, turn the jeans over to the backside and use the seam ripper to make the seam to rip out more of the seam on the backside. This way the denim material will fold over easier and not make a lump over your bum when the skirt is complete. This step is really important. Make sure that you have ripped the seam out at least an extra 3 inches.
How to turn jeans into a skirt step 4:
Now you are ready to use the extra fabric from the jeans legs that you cut off earlier. To do this insert the extra between the legs to turn it into a skirt.I usually 'eye' this part.
I place the fabric into position under the legs on the back side of the skirt and pin it down.
When pinning the back, make sure that back seam is pinned down as well, so you don't have a 'whale-tail'.
How to turn jeans into a skirt step 5:
Insert another denim piece into the front and pin down.
How to turn jeans into a skirt step 6:
After getting the front and back of skirt pieced together and pinned, it is time to sew up your jean skirt with a simple straight stitch.
Remove all the pins and use your fabric scissors to cut the excess material out.
Trim any threads or imperfections that may bother you.
I personally like a raw edge for my denim skirts, so I do not fold over and sew a folded hem.
I only sew around the raw edge, so it does not fray too much.
CONGRATS!

Do you have an old pair of denim jeans that you wish were a skirt? As long as the jeans still fit in the waist and hips, you can turn a pair of denim pants into a cute DIY jeans skirt with a pair of scissors and some basic sewing skills
materials:
- 1 pair of jeans that fit in the waist and hips still (it's ok if the knees are ripped or if they are the wrong length)
- Sewing machine thread
tools:
- Seam ripper
- sharp fabric scissors
- straight pins
- sewing machine
steps:
- Use the seam ripper to remove the inside seam of the jeans on both pant legs.
- Fold the pant legs up to about an inch or so above the crotch area. After measuring to make sure each leg is folded to be the same length, use your fabric scissors to cut off each leg at the fold.
- Turn the jeans over to the backside and use the seam ripper to rip out at least 3 more inches from the seam - this will keep you from getting a weird bump later.
- Unfold the jean legs you cut off earlier and lay them inside the pants, between the legs to make it skirt shaped.
- Place the fabric into position under the legs on the back side of the skirt and pin it down. When pinning the back, make sure that back seam is pinned down as well, so you don't have a 'whale-tail'.
- After getting the front and back of skirt pieced together and pinned, sew up your jean skirt with a simple straight stitch.
- Remove all the pins and use your fabric scissors to cut out the excess material. Trim any threads or imperfections that may bother you.

ReplyDeleteSuch a cute idea! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy mother said my grandmother made these during the depression from grandpa's jeans that got worn out at the knees or torn at the bottom. Basically if they were unsafe for him to wear while working on the farm. I bet they saw a lot of wear before she got a hold of them. Nothing went to waste.
ReplyDeleteoh wow! Great idea and tutorial! I love this! Just learning how to sew and this looks like good I might be able to do on my own, your photographs very helpful to make this project. thank you so much for sharing.

ReplyDeleteThank you Abigail. Will be trying this out. :)
ReplyDeleteSo stinking cute! I may have to blow off the dust of my sewing machine now. :)
ReplyDeleteHow do you get the hem straight? Mine looks kind of like it goes upwards to the side seams from the front and back seams.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the easiest way to get it straight is to wear it - or stuff the waist with a pillow so it’s being “worn” and cut the hem straight while it’s hanging instead of cutting it flat on a surface.
