This is the last week of school for my oldest. To say thank you to his teachers and principal, we decided to give plants - because unlike mugs (ahem), you can never have too many plants! These same gifts are perfect to give as hostess gifts, volunteer appreciation or as a thank you to just about anyone! You can use just just about any herb or flower and personalize it with colors and more.
Supplies
- Empty tin can (28 oz or larger)
- Wide burlap ribbon
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Baker's twine
- Dowel
- Clothespin
- Washi tape
- Label maker
- Clear label tape
- Small potted herb
- Potting soil
- Trowel
- Small glass stones
- Chalkboard clip ons
- Chalk markers
Directions
Step 1: Make the planter
Follow the instructions from here for how to turn the tin can, ribbon, baker's twine and hot glue into a cute planter.
Step 2: Make plant markers
Follow the instructions from here to make a plant marker to label the herb. I put the name of the herb on the washi tape side and basic plant care instructions on the back of the clothespin.
Step 3: Rehome herb
Depending on the size difference between the pot the herb came in and your new planter, you may need to add some additional potting soil to the bottom of the can before re-potting. Move the herb to its new home, adding more potting soil as needed.
Step 4: Glass rocks
In addition to looking awesome, glass rocks serve as a type of mulch to keep water from evaporating from the soil too quickly. Cover the top layer of soil with small glass rocks. These are frequently available at the dollar store and add a really nice touch to the gift.
Step 5: Thank you label
Craft Warehouse opened near me two weeks ago - which is where I saw the chalkboard clip ons. I wrote "Thank you, {teacher name}" on the front and clipped it to the front of the can.
My son also made each of them a handmade card to say thank you. The whole thing was super precious and I think they enjoyed their gifts!
