As a child, I never had seasonal allergies - even to the Pacific Northwest allergy sufferer's nemesis: Scotch Broom. When I was 21, I moved to Boston and three years later when I came home, I realized I was suddenly allergic to quite a few of the things growing here.
My husband, on the other hand, has suffered from all sorts of allergies his whole life. From pets to dust to pollen, poor air quality definitely has an effect on him. During the winter, he wants the windows open to help get relief from what's bothering him inside and during the summer he wants them closed to keep out the pollen (during prime open window weather!). And often, he feels he has to take allergy medicine anyway.
Air quality affects quality of life
If you suffer from allergies like we do, you know that your air quality directly affects your quality of life. Nobody wants to feel sniffly and sneezy or have puffy, itchy or watery eyes ever - but especially not at home.
We've talked about getting an indoor air purifier for a few years but never bought one because we were overwhelmed by choices and honestly, down deep I think we were mostly scared that we'd spend the money to get a nice one and then find out it didn't make a difference.
The Holmes Smart Air Purifier
When I was asked by Holmes if I wanted to try the Holmes® Smart Air Purifier with WeMo technology (which makes it smart phone compatible!) of course I said yes! Its true HEPA filtration system removes 99.97% of airborne allergens so I thought there was a good chance it would work for us.
We set it up over the weekend and here are some things I love about it:
- It was easy to set up
- It looks nice
- I can both control it and check the air quality right from my phone or tablet
- It will tell me when it needs a new filter (no guesswork!)
And here's the best part: both my husband and I have noticed a significant reduction in our allergy symptoms just in the last few days that we've used it.
Now, that does mean that on especially bad days we might need to carry allergy medicine with us when we leave the house because how I feel sitting in the living room is no longer an indicator of what I'll feel like outside. But it is SO nice to relax in my own living room and not feel like a sniffly, sneezy mess. Now we're talking about getting another one for our bedroom as well!
Wireless controls
The WeMo functionality is pretty cool. While I tend to care about what's happening with the air purifier when I'm home, the ability to turn it off and on when I'm not home will come in handy when we travel this summer. We'll be able to turn it off while we're gone to save energy and then switch it back on when we're on our way back so that fresh air is waiting for us when we arrive. Plus the fact that it will send me a notification when it is time to change the filter is exactly what I need - because let's be honest, if I had to remember on my own I probably wouldn't.

I don't have allergy issues but all of my kids do. I hate when the weather isn't hot enough for the air conditioner or cold enough for the heat, but you can't open the windows. That's when you can tell six people live in our house. lol I've thought about an air purifier before...definitely going to look into it more. Thanks!
