When I made over my kids' bathroom, I wanted to replace the towel bar with hooks they could hang their hooded towels on. To dress it up a bit, I wanted to put each child's initial over their hook. Plain monograms are so boring! I decided to dress them up a bit with washi tape to make them more fun!
The nice thing about these particular monograms is that they can stand up on their own (as pictured above) so you could also stand them on a shelf or dresser or hang them on the wall as part of a gallery display.
Supplies
- Paper Mache Letter from Darice
- White craft paint
- Paint brush
- Washi tape in colors that complement your space
- Mod Podge, Matte Finish
Directions
Step 1: Paint
Use the paint and paint brush to paint the monograms white. Set aside to dry. This will allow the true colors of the washi tape to show best.
Step 2: Tape
Use strips of washi tape to cover the monogram. I chose to lay my pieces running horizontal across the front. Due to the angle of the letters, they did not stay horizontal when wrapped around to the back, but that's ok. Play with the tape until you like how it looks.
Step 3: Seal
Brush 1-2 coats of Mod Podge over the top of the tape to help seal it and prevent peeling later. Set aside to dry for at least one hour between coats.
You can enjoy them as-is or hang them on the wall using a command strip.

I really like this idea! They look great and it's also a very good idea for teaching children to be tidy. I'm still working on that...!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to do this myself and your tutorial is just what I was looking for. Thanks for writing it up.
