Materials Needed:
- Clear Glass Ball Ornaments
- Glitter (on hand or $1)
- Mod Podge
- Mod Podge All Holidays Rub-on Transfers
Step 1: Take the top off the bulb ornament
Step 2: Use a brush to paint some Mod Podge inside the bottom of the ornament.
(pretty much any formula Mod Podge will do. In a pinch, you could also use watered down white glue)
Step 3: Add some glitter
Shake it around to cover all of the Mod Podge. I used a mix of chunky glitter from the dollar store and fine glitter from the $1 section of Michaels.
Pro tip: Use a popsicle stick or funnel to scoop the glitter into the ornament without making a mess
Step 4: Cut out a rub-on and apply
Use the popsicle stick to rub hard over the word to apply it to the surface. When you're done, peel it off slowly to make sure the whole thing stuck. If needed, replace the film and continue rubbing until the full word is adhered.
Step 5: Set aside to dry
You can return the top right away if you're a anxious to hang them on the tree. They will dry faster, however, if you leave the top off. It may take up a full day (or more if you put the tops back on) for the white from the Mod Podge to disappear completely.
Keep repeating the process with different glitter colors until you have your own sparkly jewel toned ornament collection. I did a variety of small ones and then made a large one and added some blue and silver dollar store bells to the side for an embellishment.

They have plastic clear ornaments that aren't too pricy would they work too?
ReplyDeletePlastic ornaments should work as well!
DeleteFor the words are you just writing them on regular paper then rubbing them on or are they decals or stickers?
ReplyDeleteThey are rub-on decals. There is a link to where you can buy them online in the supply list.
DeleteI used regular matte mod-podge and it didn't work!
ReplyDeleteDid I use too much or what because I REALLY wanted to do this project!
Oh no! Can you be more specific and tell me what about it didn't work? Feel free to email me pictures at carissa@creativegreenliving.com and I'll do my best to help.
DeleteI wanted to add that if it is still white inside, you may not have done anything wrong! It can sometimes take a few days to finish drying depending on what the temperature and humidity is like in your house. Just take the top off and set them aside until all the white is gone.
DeleteI have some clear baubles and was wondering what to do with them. Thank you for a wonderful idea. Shall do some of these as I have all the items to make them. Hope they turn out as nice as yours.

I'm wondering about the cascade of glitter down the inside of the Let it Snow blue ornament. Can you tell me how this is done? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGood question! That is actually glitter paint that was dabbed on the outside of the ornament.
DeleteAbsolutely magical. Thanks!
